Induction Hardening of Steel

Steel Hardening with Induction

When steel is hardened, the structure of the material is altered to increase wear resistance, hardness and service life. These properties are particularly valuable for components exposed to high loads, abrasion and cyclic stresses.

At Incoil, we work with induction hardening, a method that enables precise control of case depth, temperature profile and cooling in order to achieve the desired material properties in each component.

Advantages of Induction Hardening of Steel

What Happens to Steel During Hardening?

During steel hardening, the material is rapidly heated to approximately 800–900 °C, depending on the steel grade. When the steel is then cooled rapidly, the austenite transforms into martensite, a very hard but brittle structure.

Induction hardening makes it possible to direct the heating to specific surfaces, producing a hard surface layer while the core retains its original, tougher structure. This combination of wear resistance and fracture toughness is particularly important for components such as shafts, gears and transmission parts.

Typical Applications

Common components for induction hardening include:

  • Drive shafts and crankshafts
  • Gears and spline joints
  • Machine components and tool parts
  • Camshafts and other engine-related components

With a correctly designed hardening profile, friction properties, service life and tolerances can be optimised for your specific application.

Our Process

At Incoil, steel hardening is carried out using induction heating followed by immediate quenching in a cooling fluid. The rapid heating is generated by an electromagnetic field and affects only the surface, enabling highly localised and precise treatment. Subsequent tempering is used when required to adjust hardness and reduce stresses in the material.

At Incoil, we have extensive experience helping industrial companies improve the performance of their components through induction hardening.
