Induction Hardening of Metal

Induction hardening

Metal hardening is used to improve the wear resistance, hardness and service life of surfaces. At Incoil, we specialise in induction hardening, where the surface of a metal component is rapidly heated using an electromagnetic field and then cooled to transform it into a hard martensitic structure.

This produces a component with a hard, wear-resistant surface layer while the core retains its toughness and fracture resistance. Contact us to find the right solution for your components.

What is induction hardening of metal?

Unlike traditional heat treatment methods, induction hardening is a contactless and highly precise process. Heating takes place locally with a high degree of repeatability, minimising the risk of deformation and providing greater control over the final result. The method is suitable for both single-component production and automated production series.

The process consists of three stages:

Induction heating

An electromagnetic field is generated in an induction coil, heating the surface of the metal to the austenitising range, typically 800–900 °C.

Quenching

Immediately after heating, the surface is rapidly cooled, often by spraying, resulting in the formation of martensite.
Tempering (if required)

To reduce internal stresses and adjust hardness, the component can be tempered after hardening.

How does induction hardening work? How does induction hardening work?

Induction hardening is carried out in several stages to ensure an optimal result:

  1. Induction heating – A coil generates an electromagnetic field that rapidly heats the surface of the component.
  2. Rapid cooling (quenching) – Immediately after heating, the material is cooled by spraying or immersion in a cooling fluid.
  3. Hardening and tempering – After hardening, the component can undergo a tempering process to balance the hardness and toughness of the material.
